Electronic Arts is pushing players towards in-game purchases, according to leaked information

An insider at EA’s office in Burnaby, BC has leaked a 54-page document suggesting that the company is purposely leading players into their Ultimate Team game mode, which critics say includes elements linked to gambling.

FIFA Ultimate Team has been FIFA’s main selling feature, and they’ve had a steady increase in profits from their in-game card packs. The leaked document states that EA are “doing everything [they] can” to push players towards their Ultimate Team game mode, rather than other modes. These card packs give you an opportunity to improve your chances at winning, which is what compels players to open them in the first place.

Problem Gaming executive Keith Whyte compared FIFA packs to a slot machine and claimed that “nothing is more attractive” than the rush of gambling. 22 year old Jonathan Peniket is a prime example of this addiction, saying he could “buy a little rush of happiness” when opening packs. Jonathan has spent over $5,000 on FIFA packs and would use them as a way to cope with unhappy times in his life.

According to gaming researcher and computer science lecturer David Zendle, the players that have experienced problem gambling are the same players who spend a lot of money on in-game items.

EA spokesperson Charlie Fortescue did however respond to these accusations by saying that “All EA games can be played without spending on in-game items” and that the “majority of players do not spend”. However, leaked information from the insider says that it gets frustrating for players to earn coins by playing the game, which is what compels them to spend money.

FIFA Ultimate Team packs have already been banned in Belgium, which raises concerns for EA’s most successful video game series.

Burnaby high school students optimistic about their second pandemic summer

Another summer in quarantine? Or a busting out, finally post-vaccination, after over a year of pandemic blues?

For these Burnaby teens looking forward to summer, the future is uncertain but looking better.

Even though there still may be Covid restrictions in place, it will be similar to the summer of 2020, and we will be able to hangout with others, says highschool student Row Berto Diaz. He plans on working throughout the summer, as well as staying active and spending time with his family and friends.

Diaz responded with a definite yes when asked if he’ll obey all safety guidelines during the summer, prioritizing the health of others over his personal fun. “Personally, I would continue imposing the current Covid restrictions during the summer” and is hopeful that he will have a Covid-free senior year.

As the leading scorer of Alpha basketball team, Diaz is ‘hungry to dominate” in his senior ball season. “Outside of sports, I am looking forward to graduation, prom and all other senior events”. “Ensuring that we all obey safety guidelines in the next few months and throughout the summer is the only way we can experience those events” says Diaz.

Diaz concluded the interview with an emphatic message, saying “I’m tired of seeing death counts every morning, it’s time we all do our part to ensure the safety of our loved ones”

A veteran junior hockey coach has been charged with sexual assault and assault in Saskatchewan following a complaint from a former player, CBC News has learned.

Bernie Lynch, who has coached across Canada, the U.S. and Europe for more than four decades, turned himself in to police in Devon, Alta., over the weekend after the Regina Police Service issued a warrant for his arrest on April 30. He faces one count each of sexual assault and assault, dating back to August 1988. The complainant was 17 at the time. The Regina Police Service confirmed that the 66-year-old remains in custody and will be transferred to Regina as part of its ongoing investigation. Lynch is also the subject of another police investigation in Edson, Alta., where he coached the Junior A Aeros in the Western States Hockey League during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons. A recent CBC News investigation detailed allegations of abusive behaviour made by parents and players, and concerns over a close and possibly inappropriate relationship with a player. Read more about this story here.

My profile icon and header image

I chose to use Wix logo maker to create meaningful and appealing designs for my profile icon. Wix logo maker allows you to set preferences on what you want your logo to look like and then shows you multiple options to choose from. After you’ve chosen the style of your logo, you can select the colour and font you’d like the logo to be displayed in. My profile icon has a very clean and simple style with the symbol of a microphone to show I am a media sharing page. Underneath the microphone, I have the title of my blog, “Keeping up with Kyle” and the description “new media blog”, so visitors can see exactly what my page is about. I chose to use red as my background colour, because red logos are said to be the most appealing and convey both passion and excitement.

For my header image, I used Canva since I am already familiar with the website, having used it for another class. Canva is a very easy to use website that allows you to choose from multiple templates and customize the pictures, colours and fonts on that template. When designing my header image, I wanted to make it very eye catching and have pictures that represent subjects I may write about in my blog. I chose to use three pictures that captured some of the subjects I enjoy writing about, but also ones that were very colourful and appealing to the reader. The image on the left is an outdoor concert to which represent music, the middle image of the basketball hoop represents sports and the image on the right is a movie night, which represents TV and movies. Across all three pictures is a label that displays the title of my blog, along with the description “new media blog” underneath the title, to keep it consistent with my logo.

‘The Last Dance’ has smashed ESPN viewership records

ESPN and Netflix have teamed up to put together a 10 part documentary on the amazing career of Michael Jordan. ‘The Last Dance’ features all 13 of Jordan’s historic seasons with the Chicago Bulls, but mainly focuses on his final season with the franchise. During the 1997-1998 NBA season, the bulls had a film crew at each one of their games, which they knew would most likely be the last we would see of the core group of players.

The first 2 episodes of ‘The Last Dance’ aired on April 19th, 2020, and gained an average of 6.1 million viewers on ESPN and ESPN2, and many more watching the following day with it’s release on Netflix. This highly anticipated series has smashed the viewership record for ESPN documentaries with a viewership of 6.3 million people on the first episode of the series. ‘You don’t know Bo’, a 2012 film about the legendary career of two sport athlete Bo Jackson held the previous ESPN documentary viewership record with 3.6 million viewers.

This 10 part series takes us through the career of Michael Jordan, starting off with his days at the university of North Carolina (UNC) and moving through his NBA career. Each episode focuses on a portion of his career leading up towards the 1997-1998 season. The episodes bounce back and forth between early parts of his NBA career and his final season with the Bulls, rather than following a set chronological path.

The Detroit Pistons were the toughest opponent jordan had to face in his career. The “bad boys Pistons” as they were commonly known, were the most physical team in the league. They had a very strong team in the late 1980’s and dominated Jordan’s Bulls for many years. The Pistons had defensive strategies which they called “Jordan rules”, where they would hit, trip and knock him down as soon as the attacked the basket.

Michael Jordan is considered by many to be the greatest player in NBA history, and therefore has many players idolizing and modelling their game after him. Many players were compared to Jordan over the years such as Vince Carter, Grant Hill and Harold Miner, but no other player was as close to Michael Jordan as Kobe Bryant.

Plagiarism

What is plagiarism and what are the different types?

Plagiarism is the act of taking another person’s work and passing it off as your own. It is regarded as very dishonest and can result in severe consequences. Plagiarism can be performed in many ways, not just by copying and pasting information from a website. The most common type of plagiarism is paraphrasing plagiarism, where an individual takes the work of another person and changes a few words but the meaning stays the exact same. Direct plagiarism is when a person takes the exact text of another person and passes it of as their own without changing anything. Another very common type of plagiarism is accidental plagiarism. Sometimes, the text someone is writing is very close to the exact text of a website they are not even using, it just happens to be said the same way. However, it is much more common that someone is unaware of accidental plagiarism and they just change up a few words of a text and pass it off as their own without knowing that it is a form of plagiarism. Whatever the form, the act of plagiarism can result in consequences that can be very severe depending on where you are using it.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
